Understanding Backups
Backups are an essential part of ensuring your business can continue to operate should you experience…
Hardware Failures: Computers and other electronic devices can fail unexpectedly.
Human Error: Accidental deletion, overwriting, or corruption of data can occur.
Cyberattacks: Malicious attacks, like ransomware, can encrypt and render data inaccessible.
Natural Disasters: Events like fires, floods, or earthquakes can damage or destroy physical storage devices.
While we can all agree that nobody wants to deal with the pain associated with losing important files, the reality of how your information is backed up requires answering three questions.
1. WHO?
Who will confirm that the information is backed up?
In a perfect world backups could be setup and nothing else would need to be done… But that’s not reality. Somebody needs to regularly confirm content is backed up and can be restored.
MANAGED
The responsibility for confirming successful backups and performing periodic restore testing would be done by SystemArchitecture.NET.
UNMANAGED
You would take on the responsibility for managing the backups after they were initially setup and doing your own restore testing.
2. WHAT?
What method will be used to perform backups?
The type of information being backed up and how quickly you need to restore it will determine which solution works best — or use both for a comprehensive solution!
IMAGE-BASED
A single file is created that consists of a copy of the operating system and all the data (folders and files) associated with it, including the system state and application configurations. The file can be restored on another piece of equipment relatively quickly in the event of a hardware failure or data breach.
FILE-BASED
Multiple individual files are created mimicking your data files and folders. Specific files can be retrieved quickly and restored for users to access.
3. WHERE?
Where will the backups be saved?
CLOUD
Files are automatically saved to a secure location outside of your local network and can be accessed through the internet. The cost is determined monthly and is based on how much is being stored.
ON-PREMISE
Files are saved on a separate device within your local network, allowing for quicker recovery but requiring the purchase and maintenance of the device, which is vulnerable to physical disasters (fire, flood, or theft).
